The photo I chose for this header assignment was of a number of energy drinks lined up next to each other. The reason why I picked this picture as the header is because I found it to be very visually stimulating and also because of the fact that it had man different colors from the cans which added to the visually stimulating characteristics of the picture. I also liked the picture due to the fact that all of the cans are seemingly cut in half. The reason why I liked it is because it makes you look onto the next photo to the rights, by doing this it makes you view the header from left to right. Because someone is viewing the photo from left to right I found it beneficial for putting the text on the header. By having someone naturally viewing the header from the left to right, it has them reading the text “The Need for Caffeine” which makes it more fluid and normal. For the text I chose the text style “stencil” because of its strong, thick, and easily readable qualities. I also chose it because it is a font that people are accustomed to seeing in their daily lives (people see stencil everyday). Choosing a tone/color for the text of the header was difficult because of the many different colors throughout the picture. There is seemingly every color in the book in the header, from black to gray and blue to red. Because of the vast color scheme the picture has I chose white because it stays strong throughout the photo and doesn’t blend into the background and go unnoticed. By having solid white text, it is easy to read and strong because it doesn’t blend into the background picture. I then found it fun to curve the text. I chose to curve it because it gives it a fun and entertaining quality, rather than just having it be a straight text.

For our subject, our group is focusing on the topic of “Performance Enhancers.” The topic is a bit of a vast one, but we are focusing on caffeine, energy drinks, and adderall. Energy drinks have been one of the fastest growing over the last 5 years with companies such as Red Bull, Monster, and Rockstar reaping the benefits of the growing need for instant energy.

One blog that I found very interesting and helpful on our topic was “Energy Drink Rankings” (energy-drink-ratings.blogspot.com/). The blog is set up with three different vertical columns. The left column has a list of places where you can “Purchase Energy Drinks” along with advertisements from Google. The middle column is where the content of the blog is located. The blog entries are laid out detailing the cost, cost per ounce, active ingredients, taste rating, kick rating, and the final judgment of each energy drink detailed. Each entry also has a quick synopsis of the drink. Over the last 5 years, over 200 separate energy drinks have been rated and chronicled. Everything from Ace to XS Energy have been detailed by “Energy Drink Ratings.” Each entry also has a picture of the drink, by having this it provides identity to the product so consumers are able to identify the drink in stores.

On the right column of the blog there are a number of energy advertisements as long as the index of the hundreds of drinks detailed preciously on the blog. By having an index of the products it greatly helps out viewers because it allows them to quickly look up the drink they are looking for. On the right column, it also has an index of the separate months since January 2005 of which they have been posting their ratings on products. By having this monthly index, it also allows to look up what products were chronicled in what month quickly and efficiently. Another index that is located inn the right column are a number of other blogs that they produced over the years that are not product ratings. For example, some of the other blogs that they have done include: Best Energy Drink, Top 10 Energy Drinks, Caffeine Rant, and Energy Drink Commercials.

As a whole, I found the layout and content of the website as whole. I thought that it did a very good job on going into detail on such a large number of drinks. I found it very helpful and easy to use, and if you are looking for information or an opinion on the subject I would highly recommend checking out the site.

Title: Health Care

Date: September 2009

Link: http://www.whitehouse.gov/Issues/health-Care

This site was constructed by the US government to lay out and explain the effects and coinciding benefits of President Obama’s health care policy. The site is a governmental (institutional source) because the main two motives of the source is to explain their mission as well as their budget by advocating their point of view to persuade the audience, American citizens, by promoting this plan. The site lays out the progress that President Obama has made in the health industry in America as well as the guiding principles of an affordable health care plan for Americans. Because the source is tied in with Obama and his administration, it greatly promotes the implementation of a national health care policy by providing information of the benefits. This site has been a great help throughout the term with providing up to the date news about what has been going on in the discussion over the health care debate. Not only does it provide information on the debate, but also it provides links to other sites that have stories of people that are affected by the problem that we face medically in our country. In addition to detailing the progress, or lack thereof, that the bill has had over the last year or so, but it also details the “guiding principles” of the bill as well. The site has been useful in formulating my argument in the fact that it gives a great deal of information. Surprisingly, for a government site, it is fairly nonpartisan about both sides.

Title: Health Care Stories for America

Date: N/A (Stories date back to 2009)

Link: http://stories.barackobama.com/healthcare

This site was set up to “put a face on the health care crisis,” as people are able to post their personal stories dealing with their health care encounters. It is a institutional source because it is set up by the government and it is helping advocate their view to implementing a national policy. It displays stories of differing length from one sentences pieces to paragraph-long stories coming from around the country. Readers are also able to search for stories of people in their own community, town, or neighborhood that are sharing their own personal stories. The site was set up by the government in order to “put a face on the health care crisis” by creating a personal aspect to the argument passing a national policy on health care. I would have to say that after reading some of the stories that were on the site, the severity of the problem of medical care in our country became evident to me. I think that the site does a very good job in its intention of creating a emotional attachment to the issue by providing a personal side to the debate.

Title: Health Care Policy and Marketplace Review

Date: Updated February 22nd, 2010

Link: http://healthpolicyandmarket.blogspot.com/

This site is a blog set up by Bob Laszewski that reviews the latest developments in federal health policy and other activities in the health care financing business. Bob’s blog is an academic source in that it is used to better explain the world of health care to experts in the field. As a journalist and blogger Laszewski has gained great notoriety for his knowledge on the topic of health care as he has been named a “Top 5 Speaker” on health care. Laszewski covers a large in-depth range of components relating to health care going from the “Cadillac Tax” to health care costs to the public plan; Bob covers all aspects of the topic. By having such a bevy of details on health care, the site provides a great deal of information for those arguing either for or against the implication of a health care plan. This site was an enormous help for me throughout the term in the fact that it was extremely detailed on the debate of health care. The site talks about everything that is anything in the discussion of health care. The site is very up to date and very academic in its discussion of topics in the realm. I would have to say that this site was the most helpful to me in formulating my opinion on the topic because of the information and depth that it provides.

Title: The Collapse of the President’s Health Care Plan

Date: July 22nd, 2009

Link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,534361,00.html

This site is an article dealing with the slipping approval of President Obama’s health care plan written by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. The article is a journalistic source because O’Reilly is paid to explain the world to an audience that likely doesn’t have expertise in the subject. O’Reilly goes on to detail the fact that Obama is losing approval by Americans by presenting facts of disapproval ratings from latest Gallup/USA Today Polls dealing with his governmental policies. Bill ends the article by stating that Obama will not succeed in saving his vision of a national health care policy because he believes that Americans have a strong connection to freedom rather than the governmental micromanaging that Obama is doing. I found this site and story more on an entertaining level rather than a helpful stance in that it gave the personal opinion of Bill O’Reilly, a nationally renound journalist. The topic of the article dealt with the collapse of President Obama’s health care plan, although it did also provide information on then up to date approval statistics of the bill.

This article on CNBC.com speculates over the new decision by President Obama and his administration’s bid to repeal an anti-trust exemption which protects health insurers. The article is a journalistic source in that it explains the actions being done by our administration to a large audience of people that do not necessarily have any expertise in the subject. The article goes on to debate the fact of whether eliminating this exemption from anti-trust laws, which protect consumers from price fixing, is the best way to lead to competitive pricing in the health insurance field. The topic of what would happen to present health insurers is a major component in the approval or disapproval over the implementation of a national policy in that there is a grey area of what would happen to them and how it would influence pricing on policies. I found this site and article very helpful because it tied in a lot of information about the progress of the national plan before President Obama put together his health care summit.

Title: A History of Overhauling Health Care

The site is an interactive timeline of health care related events that have occurred in American history dating from the times of former President Theodore Roosevelt to our present debate over national health care with President Obama’s plan. The timeline is a journalistic source in that the site explains to an audience of viewers that might not have expertise in the history of health care in our country. The site also has links to related newspaper articles dealing with the important points on the timeline, such as an article from 1993 that talked about then President Clinton’s push to provide universal health care in which insurers compete in a tightly regulated market. The source is useful in that it gives a historical perspective to the present day debate over health care by showing the trials at tribulations of past attempts. The site gave me a very unique look into the health care debate by taking steps back to retrace the history of health care in our country. By showing the trials and tribulations that our country has had with this ordeal was very helpful to me in formulating my opinion on the subject. It showed me that there had been past attempts to what is going on now, and this helped me in the fact that I realized that our country has a history with this issue and it obviously isn’t favorable to Obama’s side.

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0_L3cLhrzA

The link is to a YouTube video that plays a song from “presentdaypaulrevere” composed with lyrics of his beliefs opposing President Obama’s health care plan. The song is a citizen/community source in that the song explains the views of “presentdaypaulrevere” on health care. The audience for this video was likely not intended to be very large because of the quality of the effects in the video. However, the video has over 9,500 views and is the most viewed “Obama Health Care Song.” The song was used in promoting the opposition of the president’s plan by making a parody on some of the out coming effects if the plan were to be implemented. I would have to say that this song really didn’t sway my opinion on the subject, nor did it help me formulate my opinion. Rather, I found this song to be quite hilarious in the fact that we are the only country that can make a joke of our own president and not be in trouble for it.

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYEzCG2h7kM

This source is a video from YouTube presented by the Associated Press the documents President Obama’s new proposal of a national health care policy. The video is a journalistic source because the Associated Press and their reporters are paid to explain the world to in this case an audience of all of America that doesn’t necessarily have expertise in the subject. The video talks about the new aspects of Obama’s plan as well as the many hurdles that the president is going to be faced with in promoting it. The video talks about how the plan will face the problem of not only Republicans being nearly unanimously against the plan, but also that many Democrats will likely be wary on promoting the plan again in an election year. It brings up the question of whether we should really be tackling the health care problem in the economic crisis we’re in right now. This really brought the attention of the Republicans’ views on the subject. Although my opinion is in similar lines to what the Republicans believe, I found it disheartening in the fact that it made it seem as if the Republicans were not even willing to look at the new proposal before denouncing it.

The site of which this page comes from is the “National Journal Expert Blogs: Health Care,” where people are able to ask questions to expert contributors or find out detailed information on the national health care plan. This site is an academic source because is used to explain the world of health care to a small group of experts on the subject. The site contains a laundry list of contributors ranging from senators and representatives to professors that contain expertise on the subject. The site provides a great deal of information on the topics within the realm of national health care and whether they are beneficial or detrimental to the president’s overall plan.

This site is a blog set up by Octopi Grippi dealing with his opinion on the topic of national health care, which he clearly states is against it. The blog is a citizen/community source in that it explains his own opinion on national health care as he sees it, explaining it to his audience of readers on his blog, which is not many. He clearly states his capitalistic views in that he believes that health care shouldn’t be just awarded to people, rather it should be earned. His beliefs are strong with those who oppose the implementation of national health care in our country. I found this site helpful in the fact that the blogger’s opinions were very much in line with my father’s. He states in his blog that health care is not a given, people work hard to gain the benefits of good health coverage and if we were to pass this bill it would be making this privilege into a right.

During the presidential campaign of 2008, one of then Senator Barrack Obama’s advertised that, if elected, one primary focuses was to address the growing discussion over the nation’s current health care situation. During his campaign, Obama made it clear that if he were to win the election that our country’s health care system would be right at the top of his list of national conflicts to address while in office, and would promote the passing of a national health care plan. The realm of debates on health care range greatly, starting with the conflict of whether our country should take responsibility of providing health care for all citizens, and if so it brings up the debate of how it would affect private insurers that provide care now. If one believes that our government should provide health care then it brings into the question about what should and should not be covered by the health care plan. Therefore, at the focal point of the debate lays the question of: “Should the entire country be forcefully grouped into one general health care policy?” With the complexity that the national plan would need to cover, I believe that the implementation of national health care coverage would not tailor to the essential medical needs that all the people of our country have, not to mention the fact that people are already able to personalize a plan to fulfill their own medical needs through insurers now. The government says that it is “working on an effort to provide health insurance reform that lowers costs, guarantees choices, and enhances quality health care for all Americans (whitehouse.gov),” however, when delving deeper into the topic it is easy to see many flaws.

The debate of what needs to be covered in the plan has sparked many debates within the grand debate of whether our nation should pass a national plan. The fact that every person has their own distinct medical needs is a loophole in the debate. The plan is outlined as such: “the national health insurance plan – “Health Care for America” – attempts to provide affordable health insurance to all non-elderly Americans through a combination of a new Medicare-like program provided by the government and existing employer-provided health plans (usgovinfo.about.com).” In principle the plan would provide affordable health insurance to the uninsured; however, “I will suggest that adding 30 million more people to an unsustainable system expecting it will create an even bigger crisis and thereby force real reform is tantamount to reboarding the Titanic in the hopes it will sink faster (healthpolicyandmarket.blogspot.com).” Although the fact that people prefer about two-to-one to have a national insurance program over the employer-based system in place now, the structure of such a plan is major hurdle for President Obama and his staff. Opposers of the plan argue the fact that financially the government cannot put in place a structured bill that would cover all the specific medical needs that people need in our country. It is nearly impossible to make a complete bill that covers the needs of people this is why the Bill O’Reilly approves that ““The more we inspect the House [health care] bill, the more it looks to be one of the worst pieces of legislation ever introduced in Congress (foxnews.com).” Therefore, they argue that people are better off with the current insurance market we have now where people are able to spend their money in order to tailor their medical coverage with their needs into their own coverage plan, making it more financially efficient. People like Octopi Grippi argue that, “Health Care isn’t a right, Health Care is a luxury you only deserve if you have the money, and if you do… to have and choose (sanssleep.wordpress.com).” In the end, by having an independent insurance market it allows people to have more of a say on what their own coverage entails.

However, supporters of President Obama and his reform have stated that the national plan would not eliminate the possibility of choosing an independent insurer to provide one’s insurance. With his plan, Obama says that people would be allowed to purchase insurance independent from the national plan. Although it sounds good in principle, it would nearly put the independent insurance business out of commission. Independent insurance prices would skyrocket in order to enough profit to stay in business because of the amount of clients they would be losing. In addition, by setting a national plan it would be essentially placing a monopoly in the insurance world in that one company would have complete control over the market. Also, insurance companies wouldn’t be the only ones that would suffer if this bill were to be passed. Insurance companies would struggle in the fact that “having a universal plan would abolish the competitive market created through capitalism,” states Bill Demas, a life insurance salesman. The entire medical business world would feel the trickle down effects of the reforms installment. “People and companies such as pharmaceutical companies and representatives as well as pharmacies would feel the effects of the government atomizing the entire industry,” believes Danny Gemma, a pharmaceutical rep for Stryker Orthopedics. However, Obama supporters argue the fact that it would be beneficial in the fact that prices wouldn’t go up, but there is a flaw in their reasoning as well. The problem deals with the taxes needed to raise the money to cover the costs. This could be a dangerous line for the government to walk because of the ambiguity of how much a national program would cost, and that “We need a failsafe, certification that if costs go up more than expected [in any part of the health care industry], something is done (healthcare.nationaljournal.com).” Increases in taxes are unavoidable in the fact that the government would need the money to accompany the medical costs.

Another potentially fatal flaw that having a national health care plan, which is not often talked about, is the fact that it puts a lot of responsibility on the people of our country, in turn making themselves their own doctors. “By having everyone have the possibility to see a doctor for anything would create a logjam of patients who would be seeing a doctor anytime they had a headache or cough,” forecasts Pat DeVoe, an anesthesiologist at Mercy General Hospital. By not paying premiums for visits it gives people the ability to take advantage of the privilege by abusing their power to see a doctor for whatever reason they see fit.

In the end, in principle having everyone have the ability to receive health care is a great idea; however, this principle comes with many smaller problems that accompany it. Government intervention in the medical market would be complicated at best, “Unfortunately, most Americans buy into the feel-good sound bites and look to the socialist utopia to provide answers, not understanding that additional government intervention always worsens the problems (liberty-page.com).” Questions such as what would be covered also provide loopholes in the reform. In the end, the government shouldn’t take away citizens’ ability to choose their own medical coverage because of the problems that grouping an entire country into one generalized group would create.

Title: Health Insurers Should Lose Anti-Trust Shield: Obama

Date: February 23rd, 2010

Link: http://www.cnbc.com/id/35547826

Title: A History of Overhauling Health Care

Link: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/07/19/us/politics/20090717_HEALTH_TIMELINE.html

Title: Obama Unveils Details of Health Care Proposal

Title: Health Care Dilema

This site is a blog set up by Octopi Grippi dealing with his opinion on the topic of national health care, which he clearly states is against it. The blog is a citizen/community source in that it explains his own opinion on national health care as he sees it, explaining it to his audience of readers on his blog, which is not many. He clearly states his capitalistic views in that he believes that health care shouldn’t be just awarded to people, rather it should be earned. His beliefs are strong with those who oppose the implementation of national health care in our country.

I came across this political cartoon on the website edsteinink.com, a journalistic source site. Ed Stein is a long-standing and well respected comic who has had a multitude of his cartoons published in such important publications as The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, USA Today, US News, World Report, and People magazine.

This particular cartoon was published in favor of Obama’s universal health care reform on his website on July 1st. Stein created the cartoon to depict President Obama trying to save the health care plan, while organizations such as the AMA (American Medical Association), GOP, and insurance and drug companies are lining up to take their hacks at trying to end the idea of a national health care plan. However, after last week’s repercussions of the election of Massachusetts Senator Scot Brown, readers are able to look at the cartoon in the way that the GOP was able to (possibly) kill the idea of a national health care plan in America. Essentially, the “elephant in the room” of this cartoon, in this case Sen. Brown, was the one who killed Obama’s plan by erasing the filibuster majority that the Democrats had on this subject.

Facing scrutiny and doubts on his proposals of a national health care plan, in June 2009 President Obama took a familiar slogan to help ignite some positive enthusiasm towards national health care. President Obama paraded around his presidential slogan of “Yes We Can!” hoping to reshape the “sky-is-falling” prognosis of where this plan was heading.

However, this picture was found on Vermont Woodchuck’s blog, a citizen/community source, stating that Obama was leading our country down the path of Marxism and Fascism, rather than helping save our country’s health problems. Rather, instead of creating a positive buzz around his presidential campaign, the recycled slogan stimulated no buzz in trying to create a positive outlook on the plan as it never caught on with the public. However, this did not stop President Obama from recycling another one of his presidential slogans. In his State of the Union address, Obama turned back the clocks by resurrecting his “Change We Can Believe In” slogan. Even though Obama stated, “right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure that they still believe we can change,” he went on to state that “I never suggested that change would be easy, or that I could do it alone.” By resurrecting this dead slogan, Obama hopes that it will help resurrect his seemingly dead health care plan. However, it seems that it will only be in time that someone will be able to poke fun of this Obama slogan as Vermont Woodchuck did earlier.
